Sixty-nine copies of card 76 have graded PSA 10, the second fewest in the set behind Jeff Malone at 67. Unlike the Malone, this one is genuinely difficult. It gems at 1.54 per cent, the fourth lowest rate of the 132 cards in the set, behind only the Jordan at 1.19, the Dominique Wilkins at 1.20 and the Larry Bird at 1.50.

Johnny Moore is filed under commons, and that is the wrong drawer.

He started all 112 games of his four years at Texas and left as the Longhorns' all-time assists leader. Seattle took him in the second round in 1979 and traded his rights to San Antonio the next day. He led the entire NBA in assists in 1981-82 at 9.6 a game. In 1984-85 he averaged 12.8 points, 10.0 assists and 2.8 steals across all 82 games, with 38 double-doubles and five triple-doubles.

Then, in December 1985, he contracted coccidioidomycosis - a rare form of meningitis known as Desert Fever. The treatment involved administering a drug through a hole drilled in his skull. He lost thirty pounds and missed the rest of the season.

Which is where this card sits. Fleer printed it for 1986-87, months after that diagnosis, at a point when nobody knew whether he would play again.

He did. He came back and played 112 more games, finishing as the franchise's all-time assists leader and second in steals. On 20 March 1998 the Spurs retired his number 00, the third number the club has ever retired. He signed his name with quote marks around the double o.

None of that is why the card is scarce. It is scarce for the same reason as every hard common in this set: hardly anybody submits one, so the tiny population reflects who bothered rather than what survived. But it is the rare case where the card is difficult on its own merits too - the 1.54 per cent rate is real, and it is why 4,481 submissions have produced only 69 tens.

Below PSA 9 this is a genuine common priced like one, and it is a lovely card to own cheaply if you like the story.

At PSA 10 you are buying a registry chokepoint. PSA has recorded sixty-nine. Heritage sold one for $21,600 in January 2024 and another for $19,800 that March - different cards, two months apart, and the market barely moved between them.

The March sale is the useful one, because the Jeff Malone at number 67 sold in the same auction three lots earlier for $26,400. Same day, same room, same bidders. The two scarcest gems in the set, priced within a quarter of each other, and neither player is in the Hall of Fame. In that same auction house four years earlier a PSA 10 Olajuwon made $15,000.

PSA 9, at 1,076 recorded copies, is the sensible target for anyone who wants the card rather than the registry slot.

Raw submissions are a poor bet here. At a 1.54 per cent gem rate you should expect roughly one 10 in every sixty-five cards you send, which is worse odds than the Olajuwon, the Barkley or the Malone.

No counterfeits of this card are documented.

what to check before you buy

Centring is the main obstacle and it is worse on this card than most of the set.

Check all four red borders for chipping and for the faintest white at the corners.

Look for print snow and surface disturbance at an angle.

Read the label for a qualifier. 38 graded copies carry one, and on a card where the whole market is the PSA 10, a 9 with a qualifier is a very different object from a clean 9.

At PSA 10, verify the certificate number with PSA. The player is obscure, the price is not.
