On 5 May 2026 two copies of this card sold in the same auction, three lots apart. The PSA 10 made $206,250. The PSA 9 made $3,625.

Fifty-seven times, for one grade, in the same room on the same afternoon.

That is the most extreme single-grade cliff this site has recorded, and it is worth understanding why it happens here rather than treating it as a curiosity.

PSA has graded 1,628 copies of card 7. Five are PSA 10. Sixty-seven are PSA 9. Two hundred and fifty-one are PSA 8.

The gem rate is 0.31 per cent, which makes this the second hardest card in the whole sixty-six-card series to find perfect. Only Luke Skywalker at card 1 is harder, at 0.17, and that card had the excuse of sitting at the front of the stack. Card 7 sat in the middle of the run like everything else.

What it has instead is the blue border and a black subject. The 1977 Topps starfield frame - lifted from Topps' own Star Trek cards with an X-wing replacing the Enterprise - runs to all four edges in a solid blue that shows every chip as a white fleck. And the image is Vader in a dark corridor, so any print flaw, any softness, any misregistration reads immediately against the black.

Topps was not printing carefully in 1977. Cards came off the press off-centre, with print defects, and occasionally out of focus, and the wax packs finished the job - gum against the sticker, wax against the card at the back of the pack.

The result is a card where 8 is common, 9 is uncommon and 10 is effectively a different market.

No other grading company has ever awarded this card a 10. Beckett has graded 28 copies and its best is an 8.5. CGC has graded 84, best also 8.5. SGC has 163 with a single gem. Across those three companies, 275 further copies and one card at the top level.

So the five PSA 10s are the entire high end of this card, everywhere, and the sales reflect that. The two PSA 9s on record made $4,148 in October 2025 and $3,625 in May 2026 - a stable, ordinary market for a nice card. The PSA 10 in that same May sale made two hundred thousand.

One earlier PSA 10 sale exists and it needs care. In November 2023 a PSA 10 carrying an MBA Gold eye-appeal designation sold for $48,000. That is a quarter of the May 2026 figure, which might look like a sticker discount and is not - the two sales are twenty-nine months apart, and this market moved a great deal in between. Two sales at different times do not isolate anything.

PSA 9 is the sensible target and it is a genuinely good card. Sixty-seven exist, two have sold publicly at $4,148 and $3,625, and it looks like the card you remember.

PSA 10 is a different purchase entirely. Five exist and one sold for $206,250 in May 2026. If that is the plan, it is a long wait and a competitive one.

PSA 8, with 251 copies, is where most collectors should be. It is affordable, available, and the difference from a 9 is usually one corner.

Beckett, CGC and SGC have graded 275 copies between them and have never awarded a 10. That does not make their holders worse, but it does mean the top of this card's market exists only in PSA plastic, and a Beckett 8.5 does not price like a PSA 9.

Buying raw is reasonable at mid grades and a poor bet at the top - the odds of a clean copy grading 10 are roughly one in three hundred.

Check which series you are buying. All five 1977 Topps Star Wars series look alike apart from the border colour, and blue is Series 1. A card numbered above 66 is a different series whatever the listing says.

And be careful with the phrase MBA Gold in a listing title. It is an eye-appeal designation applied by a third party to an already-graded card, not part of the PSA grade, and its effect on price is not established on this card.

what to check before you buy

Read the blue border along all four edges. It runs to the edge on every side and chipping shows as white flecks. This is the single most common reason the card grades below expectation.

Check centring on both sides.

Look at the dark areas of the image under angled light. The subject is black against a dim corridor, so print defects and soft focus that would be invisible on a brighter card are obvious here. Those are original to the 1977 printing rather than damage, and they cap the grade regardless.

Check the back. Series 1 backs come as a story summary, a movie facts panel or a puzzle piece, and all three are correct for this number.

Look at the copyright line for one or two small stars marking the two print runs. PSA does not separate them and collectors treat them as the same card.

If you are buying at PSA 9 or 10, verify the certificate number with PSA. At the top of this card the money justifies it easily.
