Nine copies of this card have graded PSA 10. Across Beckett, SGC and CGC combined, on 1,630 further graded copies, there are none.

That is unusual even by the standards of this site. Card 1 of a set is always the worst preserved, and this one is the most extreme case we have recorded.

The reason is the same one that put the 1984-85 Star Michael Jordan on the outside of a polybag and left the 1940 Superman card 1 as the most graded and least preserved card in its set. Card 1 sits at the front of the stack. It takes the rubber band, it faces outward in the box, and it absorbs the handling meant for everything behind it.

The numbers separate cleanly. PSA has graded 5,252 copies of this card - a tenth of the entire 66-card series on one number. Twenty-one per cent of them come back PSA 3 or lower. Across the other sixty-five cards in the series that figure is three per cent.

It gems at 0.17 per cent. The series average is 2.33. Card 1 is thirteen times harder to find perfect than a typical Series 1 card, printed on the same sheets, in the same packs, in the same summer.

Topps did not help. The cards were sold in fifteen-cent wax packs of seven cards, a sticker and a stick of gum, and the packaging destroyed its own contents - wax against the card at the back of the pack, gum against the sticker. Quality control in 1977 was poor even by the standards of the time, so copies came out off-centre, with print defects, and occasionally out of focus.

The single most common grade on this card is PSA 4, with 1,104 copies. Not 7, not 8. A fifth of the graded population is a 3 or worse, and 89 are PSA 9.

The two PSA 10s that have sold publicly are separate cards. One made $268,400 at Heritage in October 2025 with certificate 23341391. The other made $687,500 in May 2026, certificate 40753016 - two and a half times as much, six months later, from a population that did not change in between.

Two sales are not a trend. But on a card where nine gem copies exist and no other grading company has ever awarded one, the gap between those two figures is worth looking at rather than averaging away.

Decide early whether you are buying the card or the grade, because on this one they are entirely different purchases.

The card is common. PSA has graded more than five thousand and the most frequent result is a 4. A PSA 4, 5 or 6 Luke Skywalker is an easy card to buy and an inexpensive one, and it is the same photograph as the ones making six figures.

The grade is not common. Nine PSA 10s exist and 89 PSA 9s. Above PSA 8 this becomes a different market with a different kind of buyer, and the two recorded PSA 10 sales are $268,400 and $687,500.

PSA 8, with 390 copies, is the sensible ceiling for most people. It is a genuinely good-looking card and it sits below the point where prices leave the ground.

Note which grading company you are looking at. Beckett, SGC and CGC have graded 1,630 copies between them and none has ever awarded a 10. That does not make their holders worse - it means the top of this card's market exists only in PSA plastic, and a Beckett 9 is not the equivalent of a PSA 9 in price even if it may be in condition.

Buying raw is reasonable at low grades and a poor bet at high ones. The odds of a clean copy grading 10 are roughly one in six hundred.

And check the series. All five 1977 Topps Star Wars series look alike apart from border colour, and blue is Series 1. A card numbered above 66 is not from this series whatever the listing says.

what to check before you buy

Check centring first, on both sides. It is the usual reason this card grades below expectation and it was a problem when the cards were new.

Read print defects and soft focus as original. Topps printed this series from 35mm slides with poor quality control, and a slightly fuzzy image is how the card left the factory rather than evidence of anything that happened since.

Look along the blue border for chipping and for the white flecks that show at the edges. Blue shows everything.

Check the back. Series 1 backs come as a story summary, a movie facts panel, or a puzzle piece, and the puzzle backs are part of two larger images assembled across the set. All three are correct for this card number.

Look at the copyright line for one or two small stars. Those mark the two print runs. Collectors treat them as the same card and PSA does not separate them in the population report, so it is a curiosity rather than a premium.

If you are buying at PSA 9 or 10, verify the certificate number with PSA. At those levels the money justifies the minute it takes.
